In 2006 the applicant leased Wizo House, which was built by the Afifi family, and the upper story of adjacent Shukri House, which was constructed by Uda al-Hamar, for use as a boutique hotel. The buildings, which were erected in the nineteenth century, are examples of the magnificent homes of the affluent families that were built during this period in Old Akko and they are subject to preservation guidelines by virtue of the directives in the Master Plan of Old Akko No. 10895/c and its preservation appendix.
The current project involved documenting the construction technology and the decorative components in the buildings prior to their undergoing conservation and restoration. These components include paintings on wooden and plaster ceilings and a wall painting (1864). The decorative components were documented on a scale of 1:1. In the first phase the current state of the component was recorded. In the second phase the layers of later paint overlying the original decorated surface were exposed. In the third phase a reconstruction of the original decoration was made on carton. This reconstruction will serve as a printing plate when the ceilings are restored at the site.
As part of the documentation and planning process attempts were made to clean, reinforce, conserve and exhibit the decorations. In conclusion a series of recommended measures was drawn up that will aid the conservators in their work.
