In 1998 the Society for the Preservation of Israel Heritage Sites, the descendants of Reuven Lehrer and the Nes Ziyyona Municipality initiated measures aimed at rehabilitating Nahalat Reuven and opening it for public activities.
The historical documentation, the survey and the rehabilitation planning of the site are directed by Dr. Avi Sasson of the Foundation for the Research of the Coastal Plain, at the Ashkelon Academic College. The conservation and reconstruction of a saqiya well is being implemented by the Conservation Department of the Antiquities Authority, with the aim of operating it using the original technology.
Nahalat Reuven was the first outpost in the Nes Ziyyona settlement. The family of Reuven Lehrer settled there at the time of the First Aliyah (1882). It was from this outpost that family members and the other first settlers spread out and established other neighborhoods.
There are the remains of a number of buildings in Nahalat Reuven, among them those of the founder’s house, the remains of the first Beit Minyan, a saqiya well and a water system.
The measures taken to rehabilitate the well include:
The conservation and engineering stabilization of the well: pointing up joints, completing the stonework in walls of the well structure, sealing the tops of the walls (coping) and the restoration of the carpentry in the saqiya.
